What to Cancel After Someone Dies – A Practical Checklist

When someone passes away, there’s an immediate list of urgent things to do—but often, the to-do list that follows is much longer, more complicated, and emotionally draining.

One of the most frustrating parts? Figuring out what needs to be cancelled or transferred… and then having to relive the loss every time you make a call or fill out a form. That’s where we step in.

Here’s a practical guide to help you understand what usually needs to be closed off—and how Fairlight can help you get it done calmly and correctly.

Financial Accounts

  • Bank accounts (including joint accounts, term deposits, and KiwiSaver): Notify the bank’s bereavement team. They’ll freeze or transfer accounts depending on the situation.

  • Credit cards and loans: These must be cancelled or paid off through the estate.

  • KiwiSaver: Contact the provider to release funds.

Government & Legal

  • IRD: A final tax return may be required.

  • WINZ / Superannuation: Cancel pension or benefit payments to avoid overpayments.

  • ACC: Notify them in case any compensation is owed.

  • Electoral Roll: Remove the person from the roll to avoid future mail.

Utilities & Subscriptions

  • Electricity, water, gas, internet: Cancel or transfer accounts for the property.

  • Sky TV, streaming platforms (Netflix, Spotify): These can continue charging if not cancelled.

  • Phone plans: Mobile and landlines often need to be shut off or transferred quickly.

Memberships & Clubs

  • Gyms, RSA, Lions, golf clubs, loyalty programs, and more. Some may offer refunds—others won’t stop charging unless directly notified.

Insurance Policies

  • Home, contents, car, health, life: Notify providers and begin any claims or cancellations.

Why this step matters

Every time you cancel a service or notify a provider, you’re asked to explain the situation. Over and over again. It’s emotionally exhausting.

Without support, it’s easy to miss something important—or to keep paying for services that are no longer needed. In some cases, missing cancellations can result in added fees, frozen estate assets, or missed refunds.

Fairlight takes over this admin load so you don’t have to relive the grief repeatedly—saving you time, emotional energy, and potentially a lot of money.
